Muaythai has it’s roots in Thailand & comes from the ancient martial art of Muayboran in Thailand, where practitioners used the skill to neutralize and / or kill opponents during times of war, when they lost their weapons. It is also the national sport of the Kingdom of Thailand & was initially taught to the King’s guards. Muaythai stands out from other martial arts as it uses eight limbs – fists, elbows, knees & shins – of both hands & both legs. Most other striking arts do not include grappling in it, whereas Muaythaiincludes multiple clinching techniques to neutralize / overpower the opponent.

The World Boxing Council Muaythai Sri Lanka has commenced several initiatives to strengthen the image & popularity of this sport in Sri Lanka. They are also in the process of further establishing Muaythai as a sport in the country, after it was to have been introduced to the country in the beginning of this millenium.
