BRC Hosts ICC Wills World Cup Winners of 1996

The Committee of Management, Staff & Members hosted some members of the famous Sri Lanka team that achieved the most cherished sporting success for the country 25 years ago. That team included Pramodya Wickramasinghe ( Opening Bowler ) & Romesh Kaluwitharana ( Opening Batsman ) who had been in the team that recorded the first win in domestic premier division inter club cricket against Tamil Union Cricket & Athletic Club, on the Turf Wickets of the Burgher Recreation Club during the latter half of the 80s decade.

Captain, Arjuna Ranathunga ( won the toss, elected to chase for the first time in an ICC 50 Overs CWC Finals, scored the winning runs against the hapless Australians ), Vice Captain, Aravinda De Silva ( Player of the Final having scored an unbeaten century after picking up 03 wickets ), Roshan Mahanama, Hashan Thilakaratne, Kumar Dharmasena, Chaminda Vaas, Romesh Kaluwitharana, Ravindra Pushpakumara & Upul Chandana were present on the occassion. Pramodya Wickramasinghe was in the West Indies as the Selector on Tour with the National Team, Sanath Jayasuriya was in India playing for the Sri Lanka Legends in the Road Safety World Series T 20 Championship while Asanka Gurusinghe is living abroad. Muttiah Muralitharan & Marvan Atapattu were not able to attend.

Lasith Nanayakkara ( President ) spearheaded the organising of the simple but gracious event. Others present included Rohan De Alwis ( General Secretary ), Asanga Amarathunga ( Treasurer ), Dennis De Rozairo ( Patron ), DIG of Police ( Retired ) Jayantha Paranathala ( Past President ),  Rahula Dasanayake ( Immediete Past President ), K H Nandasena ( Senior Vice President ) & a few Committee Members.

Sajeewa Chanaka De Silva ( former Test Cricketer & Head Coach of the present BRC Cricket Coaching School ) was able to accompany a few of the Heroes to meet the Members & Guests who were patronizing at the Club during this period. The cordial & comfortable atmosphere at the cozy Redwood Lounge prompted a few Champion Cricketers to enjoy & share with the hosts some great experiences & memories related to sports & life.

After the unbeaten team returned to the country after their heroics & historic win, the Burgher Recreation Club was the first sports club in the island to felicitate and also appreciate their contribution to the nation & present them all with the Honorary Life Membership of the BRC. Former All Ceylon Cap & then President, Jayantha Paranathala together with the grateful Committee of Management were unanimous in extending this singular honour to the two Club Members & their colleagues of the Champion Team, during the Centenary Year of the Club. Now, Exactly 25 years later, BRC had the joy of being the first Sports Club in Sri Lanka to host the Heroes once again, fondly remembering, much appreciative & whole heartedly acknowledging the glorious adventure of the Sports Ambassadors of the Pearl of the Indian Ocean. Incumbant President, Lasith Nanayakkara together with his dedicated team is continuing the good work to uplift the image & quality of service at the BRC.

BRC was formed in 1896 & are involved in Cricket, Hockey as well as Billiard & Snooker at national level competitions. The active present membership is around 600 with the venue & it’s infrastructure assisting schools & organisations in the vicinity.
