We Are Back Home

IOC JOC XXX11 Summer Olympic Games Tokyo 2020

The National Olympic Committee of Sri Lanka delegation & Sri Lanka media team together with Boxing Referee & Judge from Sri Lanka, Chief Inspector of Police – Nelka Shiromala travelled back home on the 10th of August. Also on the flight was Amal Edirisooriya, Director General of Sports. The Narita International Airport was virtually empty. Very few aircraft operated during the time we spent at the airport. The arrival / departure areas were idling without aircraft at parking bays / embarkation gates.

The authorities staff at the airport enabled a smooth send off to emplane. The push back was on time but reported technical issues called it back to the terminal. After the minor issues were attended to we were airborne in good weather conditions. Captain Gayan made an announcement that First Officer Harshani would handle the flight from take off to landing. The flight from Gate 73 of Terminal 2 was scheduled from 11.20 am. Actual departure time was 12.42 pm. The scheduled arrival was 05.10 pm. The actual arrival was 05.19 pm. The distance from Narita to Katunayake was 6894 Kms. The average speed of the aircraft was 849 Kms. It climbed to a maximum height of 38,000 Ft.

At the Katunayake airport it was well arranged to receive us. Health Authorities checked duly perfected form including personal information, double vaccination certificate issued from Sri Lanka Army Hospital in Narahenpita & Negative PCR certificate from Japan obtained within 72 hours of arrival. Customs formalities were cleared promptly, the duty free shopping done, we were subjected to an on arrival PCR Test ( Nasal ) with the health authorities well organised & made us feel welcome. Then Sri Lanka Army personnel arranged for the transfer to the Jetwing Sea in Negombo – the hotel for us to be in quarantine until the negative certificate of the – on arrival PCR was issued. It was a process that was experienced by a lot of us for the first time. The registering of passengers, the loading & unloading of baggage, the transfer by luxury bus & the disinfecting of all the baggage & registering of residence at the hotel was done by the security services & hotel staff in an orderly manner. The stay at the hotel overnight was comfortable. The food was in packets delivered to the room door. I was with Thusith Wijedoru – our Official Photographer for the National Olympic Committee of Sri Lanka. We received our health certificates on the morning of 11th August – only Jithendra Prasad Selvathurai of Veerakesari being detected as a positive case. His room mates, Sanjeewa Dharmasena ( Ada ) & Wichithra Weerasinghe ( Mawbima ) were requested to fulfill the required home quarantine while Jithendra Prasad was sent for quarantine with medical supervision. The role played by the National Olympic Committee of Sri Lanka during the return from Japan & release to home was well organised & executed. The system in place for this purpose is commendable & the Government of Sri Lanka must be congratulated for the manner it has been put in place.
