Sri Lanka Assured of the First Medal at the Asian Games

Sri Lankan athletes were involved in 13 disciplines covering 08 sports today. The Sri Lankan Women beat Pakistan Women by 06 wickets in the semi final to qualify for the final against India – the top ranked team in Asia. The men’s rugby team were soundly beaten in the pool stage by Chinese Taipei & South Korea, the same score line of 22 – 07 in both games. At half time Chinese Taipei led 12 – 07 while South Korea led 10 – 07 at lemons. The team is participating under the flag of the Olympic Council of Asia, as they have been banned by the Asian Rugby Football Union.

Hosts China, who are the biggest contingent at the Games secured their first goal to claim the first Gold Medal in Hangzhou. The Rowing Gold was achieved in the Women’s Lightweight Double Sculls discipline. Infact, the rowing teams drowned their opponents with 06 major podium finishes for the hosts, in women’s & men’s events.

In the Semi Finals of Women’s Cricket, India Wmn bt Bangladesh Wmn by 08 wickets. Bangladesh Wmn electing to bat, 51 all out – ( 17.5 Overs ) Skipper Nigar Sultana 12 – 05 batters dismissed without scoring – Pooja Vastrakar 4 / 17 – career best.

India Wmn in reply, 52 / 2 – ( ( 8.2 Overs ) Jemima Rodrigues 20no, Shafali Verma 17 – the pair added 21 runs for the 02nd wicket – Fahima Katun 1 / 07, Marufa Akter 1 / 13.

Sri Lanka Wmn beat Pakistan Wmn by 06 wickets. Pakistan Wmn put into bat, 75 / 9 – ( 20 Overs ) Shawaal Zulfiqar 16, Muneeba Ali 13, Omaima Sohail 10 – lost the first 05 wickets for the addition of 47 runs, the last 04 wickets fell for the addition of 19 runs – Udeshika Prabodhani 3 / 21, Kavisha Dilhari 2 / 15, Nilakshi De Silva & Skipper Chamari Athapaththu 02 catches each.

Sri Lanka Wmn in reply, 77 / 4 – ( 16.3 Overs ) Harshitha Samarawickrama 23, Nilakshi De Silva 18no, Anushka Sanjeewani 15, Skipper Chamari Athapaththu 14 – lost the first 03 wickets for the addition of 18 runs – Harshitha Samarawickrama / Nilakshi De Silva 35 runs for the 04th wicket – Sadia Iqbal 1 / 13, Diana Baig 1 / 15.
