Official Fun Run Programme Concluded Successfully

The Fun Run programme related to the 19th Asian Games Hangzhou 2022 was held at the Sri Lanka Port City, Colombo. With over 700 children & athletes participating, it was a rare experience for all participants at one of the unique locations in the country. The Colombo International Financial City on reclaimed land bordering the Colombo Port, was chosen as the venue as it was a project assisted by the Government of China. It was held under the patronage of Captain Husain Al – Musallam – the Director General of the Olympic Council of Asia. Participating as the Chief Guest was Chen Xiangyuan – Counsellor of the Embassy of China in Sri Lanka. Also attending was Jian Zhou – Director of Media & Broadcast,Olympic Council of Asia.The contingent present from the Hangzhou Games Organising Committee included Wu Jianzhong – Deputy Director, Games Services Department, Ge Jianyang – Staff of Press Public Relations Department & Bao Hanyuan – Staff of Games Services Department.

The media conference was held the previous day at the Hemasiri Fernando Auditorium of the Olympic House in Colombo. The Games was rescheduled from last year due to the COVID 19 pandemic. It is now scheduled to be held from 23rd September to 08th October this year in the capital city of the Zhejiang Province. Rated as the best Commercial City in mainland China, it is also a major city for scientific research in Asia Pacific. Hangzhou will be the third city in China to host the Asian Games – the pinnacle regional sporting extravaganza.

The Fun Run activities commenced around 04.00 pm with a colorful parade involving school children, athletes, the visiting dignitaries, office bearers of the National Olympic Committee of Sri Lanka, representatives of various sports associations, armed forces, police, Ministry of Education & sponsors. It was flagged off on the 01 km walk by the Chief Guest in the company of the Secretary General, Treasurer & Vice Presidents of the National Olympic Committee of Sri Lanka, who were the main organizer of the event. The Parade was conducted from I Love Port City point to the Public Beach area.

The Fun Run was conducted at the main venue at the Public Beach Area. The 02 km run was difficult for the competitors on sand with strong winds.

05th Place : Senumi Dulathma – Presbyterian Girl’s School, Maradana

Boys
Winner : Krishan Joel – St. Joseph’s Boy’s College, Grandpass
Runner Up : Esath Prasansana Vas – St. Joseph’s Boy’s College, Grandpass
03rd Place : Handusan Praiyan – Hindu College, Mutwal
04th Place – A Gobi – Hindu College, Mutwal
05th Place : T Suwethsagar – Hindu College, Mutwal

The Jet Ski Demonstration was conducted by Debug Auto Exclusive – affiliated to the Jet Ski Association of Sri Lanka. The Dragon Boat Demonstration was conducted by the three armed forces. The Taekwondo Demonstration was conducted by the Sri Lanka Taekwondo Federation. The contest for knowledge of the 19th Asian Games was held with a five member team for schools.

03rd Place : 17 Points – Presbyterian Girl’s School, Maradana
Runners Up : 20 Points – St. Joseph’s Girl’s High School, Grandpass
Winners : 20 Points – St. Joseph’s Boy’s College, Grandpass

There was a tie after the scheduled rounds. A tie breaker was implemented to select the winners for awards. The Modern Penthathlon Federation of Sri Lanka conducted the contest for school children. The 05 member team from St. Joseph’s Boy’s College, Grandpass emerged winners & won the awards. Singer Mario Ananda performed a tri lingual solo item. the Beach Volleyball Demonstration was conducted by the Sri Lanka Volleyball Federation. The Sri Lanka Navy performed the Modern Pooja Dance, the combination Masks Dance & the Wes Dance. The Sri Lanka Army conducted the Angampora Demonstration. The 05 schools were presented with Certificates of Participation, Sports Equipment & Books for School Libraries. The three Armed Forces & Police together with the Colombo Municipal Council, the University of Moratuwa, the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Health, the Sri Lanka Port City were amongst the organisations assisting the National Olympic Committee of Sri Lanka in executing this programme.

The event concluded around 08.00 pm. This Official Fun Run Programme of the 19th Asian Games 2022 for South East Asia commenced in Maldives on the 04th of February. Sri Lanka was the 02nd Leg. The next event will be Bhutan. It is scheduled to end in Brunei on the 12th of March after 12 events.

President – Suresh Subramaniam, Secretary General – Maxwell De Silva, Treasurer – Gamini Jayasinghe, Vice Presidents – Suranjith Premadasa & Niloo Jayathilaka & Assistant Secretary – Chandana Liyanage of the National Olympic Committee of Sri Lanka also participated in the programme.
