Mathilda Eliminated In Qualifying Round

IOC JOC XXX11 Summer Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 – 12th Day

Equestrian was introduced to the Modern Olympic Games in 1912. The 03 Disciplines are Jumping, Eventing & Cross Country. Mathilda Karlsson represented Sri Lanka in the Jumping segment of Equestrian conducted at the Equestrian Park, situated 23 Kms from the Main Press Centre. Born in Sri Lanka, she was fostered in Sweden & is now domiciled in Germany. She was the 09th & last member of Team Sri Lanka who represented the Island Nation at Tokyo 2020.

The specifications for the event is noteworthy as the extremely popular & immensely competitive sport is rather alien to Sri Lankan sports lovers.

Speed : 400 M / Minute
Distance : 590 M
Time Allowed : 89 Seconds
Height : 165 cms
Type : Table A, not against the clock

Altogether 73 contestants presented themselves for the qualification round. Mathilda Karlsson was 13th & the first Female rider to enter the arena. She was riding Chopin VA. After what appeared to be a confident start, she faulted the 06th jump but recovered to clear it. The 08th obstacle was not attempted by the horse & she was eliminated for committing a 02nd fault, as per the rules. The rider & the horse seemed a good combination.

Speaking to the Sri Lankan media after the event, Mathilda Karlsson was also fighting back tears as she hinted at her probable lack of experience at an event of this magnitude. She opined that it may have been a case of not the best of riding skills used by the rider that accounted for the horse to falter. She barely completed the first half of the action. She mentioned about preparation for top events in the future with a plan to win a medal in regional competitions that are
lined up for next year. It must be noted that Mathilda Karlsson had a perfect practice session two days ago. That made the officials & authorities so much more confident of obtaining qualification to the next round – being in the top 30 out of 73. So now all 09 Team Sri Lanka participants have failed to progress beyond the Preliminary Round.

Mathilda Karlsson experienced some difficult situations. After securing a quota for participation, she was informed that her position had been reversed. With assistance & guidance from the Sri Lanka Equestrian authorities she appealed & got back her position to participate at Tokyo 2020. A fire destroyed part of her stable with 02 horses perishing as a result. The COVID 19 pandemic curtailed her preparations too. One of six debut participants in the team, this was the first occasion that a Sri Lankan had represented a major sporting event in Equestrian.

Jessica Springsteen – daughter of USA singer – songwriter Bruce Springsteen & his former backing singer Patti Sciafa also competed as the 49th to enter. She finished equal 31st ( 11 of them ) just outside the top 30 to qualify for the Medal Round. She is now residing in Belgium.
