The Men’s Basketball Finals were held between defending champions USA & France, the next hosts. Saitama Super Arena, situated 46 Kms from the Main Press Centre is a sprawling state of the art ultra modern indoor facility. After losing to France in the preliminary stage, the Team USA were aiming for sweet revenge apart from their fourth bid for the top medal.

France began with a bang, running up a 10 – 04 lead before the Technical Time Out called by USA. The hot favourites before the Games started to get a feel of the court as they got level on 15 – 15 with 02 minutes remaining. At the end of the 01stQuarter USA led 22 – 18 against France. The leaders missed four 3 pointers whilst getting one in. 02 Slam Dunks in & three 03 pointers missed by France indicated a case of fluctuating fortunes for them. In the 02nd Quarter both teams seemed intent on applying pressure on their opponents. At one stage late in the 02nd period of play, the North American team enjoyed a 38 – 26 advantage over their European rivals, who pulled it back to go in for the halftime break at 44 – 39. The leaders were very erratic in their shooting. The lay ups were not done with conviction & USA were feeling the pressure going into the breather. France had 01 Slam Dunk & one 03 pointer during the time on court.

USA came out with their powerplay to commence the 03rd Quarter. France were equal to the task. At 56 – 45 in favour of USA, France took a Technical Time Out. The French mistakes were beginning to take place more frequently. They had four 03 pointers missed but an equal number in too. USA had four 03 pointers in against 02 missed. Both teams accounted for 01 Slam Dunk each. USA led 71 – 63 when the 03rd Quarter ended.

During the decisive last Quarter both teams executed a Slam Dunk each. France recorded two 03 pointers in but USA managed only one. The substitutions were by now playing a major role for both teams. As USA with their vast experience were managing the on court proceedings more confidently as France experienced unforced errors, such as missing penalty baskets. The game ended at 87 – 82 in favour of the USA stars. France were dejected to lose but earned the respect of all present for their relentless ability to be offensive. They had two 03 pointers as against one by USA. 01 Slam Dunk for each team. Other than Kevin Durant, none of the others were consistent with their allround play. The all time highest scorer for Team USA displayed the full variety of his special shooting ability to power his team to victory, contributing 29 points. He rarely missed & was generous & intelligent in passing the ball for others to net. Often it was not to be. The shooting of Team USA seemed very ordinary, at times presenting possession to their opponents.

The Men’s Football final at the empty International Stadium in Yokohama was a sorry sight, really. 42 Kms from the Main Press Centre, it would have been a real treat if it was full. Brazil as defending champions had to pull off a stunner, as the soccer pundits believed. The opponents from either side of the Pacific Ocean had different styles & cultures as far as the game is concerned. Brazil soccer fans amongst a small crowd of volunteers, athletes & officials witnessed Brazil kick off. The initial time of play was somewhat incident free. After a few missed kicks at Goal & also a few good saves by the Spanish Goal Keeper – Simon, the Video Assisted Referee system for a possible penalty was effected. As the Australian Referee ruled for the penalty, spanish eyes were wet. As Forward Cunha lined up in the 38th minute of play, it seemed a normal situation. He kicked over the net, to the utter disbelief of even the most fanatic spanish football fan. Spain forced a corner after a free kick but as a save off a Brazil kick at Goal was also witnessed, the short whistle was sounded, the South Americans led 1 – 0 against the Euro outfit.

Spain attacked looking for the equaliser as the 02nd half got underway. The Spanishmanaged to keep possession for most part of the early action after resumption of play. Brazil still managed a powerful kick at Goal that was parried away by the Spanish custodian, Simon. As the Forwards & Mid Fielders combined effectively, there were a lot more opportunities created by the Spanish footballers. They equalised through a collective effort with OyarZabal netting the ball to level the score. The Forward saw the ball & was at the right position & well poised to beat the Brazilian Santos. Spain were unlucky as 02 long range kicks hit the crossbar that signalled a response by Brazil to break the deadlock. They almost succeeded but at full time, it was 1 – 1.

Both sides made player substitutions to start playing during extra time. With aggressive running & meaningful ball control both teams took turns in running the ball long & wide. With a flurry of activity & near misses the first half of extra time ended without any addition. Malcom brought in as an extreme for Brazil seemed exciting, the moment he stepped onto the field. Receiving the ball from inside his half, with fresh legs, he produced a solo run that was too much to match. As the ball sank into the back of the Spanish net, in the 03rd minute of the 02nd session of extra time, the fate of the match was sealed. Despite some late desperate moves Spain simply could not breach the solid defence put up by Brazil. So when play was over, with the sound of the long whistle by the referee, it was yet another samba celebration before the medal ceremony. Yes, Spain were very unlucky. But Brazil were destined & deserved to win.
