The International Olympic Committee in a media briefing held at the Main Press Centre in Porte Maillot, revealed the results of the election held to elect 04 new members to the IOC Athletes Commission. Participating & seated at the Head Table were Kaveh Mehrabi – Director, IOC Athletes Department – Member IOC Executive Board, Emma Terho – Chair of the IOC Athletes Commission, Nicole Hoevertsz – IOC Vice President & Chair of the IOC Election Commission & also Mark Adams – IOC Spokesperson, who conducted the media briefing. It was made known that out of 10, 613 athletes competing at Paris 2024, 6576 had cast their votes, amounting to a healthy 61.96%. Altogether 32 athletes from around the world gained nominations for the election, on approval by the IOC Executive Board. 03 of them were disqualified while 29 were eligible representing 15 sports & coming from all 05 continents. Allison Felix : USA – Athletics ( 2880 ) – 05 Olympics, Kim Bui : Germany – Gymnastics ( 1721 ) – 03 Olympics, Jessica Fox : Australia – Canoe ( 1567 ) – 04 Olympics & Marcus Daniell : New Zealand – Tennis ( 1563 ) – 02 Olympics were the 04 elected to serve for a term of 08 years – beginning from the end of Paris 2024 & ending at the end of Brisbane 2032. The new members will contribute to ensuring that the athletes’ voice remains at the heart of the Olympic Movement’s decisions. The IOC Athletes Commission represents all athletes & supports them throughout their careers on & off the field of play. Niluka Karunaratne: Sri Lanka – Badminton ( 308 ) – 03 Olympics was placed 26th. This was the first time ever a Sri Lankan Olympian had success in obtaining a nomination for this election. It is considered as a recognition to the country, the National Olympic Committee & the athlete. 19 of the 29 athlete were present at the media briefing,with one of those elected – the New Zealander joined in via Zoom.
