IOC JOC XXX11 Summer Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 – 05th Day

The International Olympic Committee held a Media Conference at the Tokyo Big Sight Main Conference Hall of the Main Press Centre. The main focus was to introduce the IOC Refugee Olympic Team at Tokyo 2020. The 29 member team in Japan come from 11 countries, training & living in the territories of 13 host National Olympic Committees. They are competing in 12 sports. The Chef de Mission is Tegla Loroupe of Kenya ( Olympian & former Marathon world record holder ). Olivier Niamkey ( International Olympic Committee ) & Stephen Pattison ( United Nations High Commission for Refugees ) will act as Deputy Chefs de Mission.

In an endeavour to raise awareness of the magnitude of the refugee crisis of the world, the Refugee Olympic Team is participating for the 02nd time, powered by the Olympic Solidarity Programme. It was first included at the Rio Games in Brazil ( 2016 ). A brainchild of the far sighted incumbent President of the International Olympic Committee, Thomas Bach, the 56 who benefit from the Refugee Athlete Scholarship – holders initiative is now showing results.
