Yupun Abeykoon Even Better As Fastest In South Asia
26 year old Yupun Abeykoon now domiciled in Rome, Italy did a personal best of 10.15 seconds in the 100 M Final at the 10th Giulio Memorial Athletics Championship 2021. He improved on the previous best of 10.16 seconds as the Sri Lanka National Record & South Asia Record holder. Yupun was the Silver Medal winner behind Lorenzo Patta of Italy, who clocked in at 10.13 & ahead of Matteo Melluzo also of Italy who was timed at 10.25 seconds.
Earlier in the 03rd & last Heat of the event, Yupun Abeykoon was the first to the finish at 10.13 seconds, ahead of Patta at 10.18 seconds & Melluzo on 10.29 seconds. The times were not recognized due to the higher wind assistance. But the big story of the 100 M was recorded in the 02nd Heat when Lamont Marcell Jacobs of Italy ran in a remarkable 9.95 seconds, a new Italian National Record, to win his Heat. The Euro Indoor Record holder over 60 M was not able to compete in the Final as he was not comfortable with his calf during the warm ups. This was the first European Athletics Outdoor Area Permit Meet this summer in Savona, Italy.
The past pupil of Pannala National School & St. Joseph Vaz College, Wennappuwa is also the Record Holder of 60 M Indoors in Sri Lanka & South Asia.
