The Sports & Recreation Department of the Colombo Municipal Council will be conducting the Inaugural Mayor’s Cup Challenge Trophy Hockey Tournament 2021 at the Astro Turf in Colombo from the 01st to the 04th of April. The media briefing in this regard was held at the Redwood Lounge of the Burgher Recreation Club, situated at Havelock Park, Colombo. My Cola Beverages & MFA Cargo will be the main sponsors of the event where 20 matches are lined up to be completed.
The 12 teams invited are Sri Lanka Army, Sri Lanka Navy, Sri Lanka Air Force Force, Sri Lanka Police, Kandy District HA, Mastaris SC, Matale, Old D S Senanayakians, Old Royalists, Old Nalandians, CH & FC, BRC & CMC as hosts. The leading Hockey Clubs in the country will field the cream of the talent available in the sport. The live streaming throughout the entire duration of the tournament on multiple social media platforms will be a boon to the sports lovers & especially the Hockey enthusiasts, starved of live action due to the COVID 19 pandemic. Strict health guidelines will be enforced as it was informed that spectators will not be allowed at the only venue. On the first 02 days the 12 teams will play in the 04 Groups. The Quarter Finals are scheduled for the 03rd day. The Semi Finals will be followed by the Consolation & Championship Finals on the 04th & last day.
The Colombo Municipal Council owns 29 sports facilities, some with indoor sports facilities. Instructors & Coaches promote & popularise 16 sports within their area.
