02 Sri Lanka Records and 12 Meet Records were established as the Athletics programme of the 41st National Sports Festival was concluded at Diyagama. Around 850 men / women participated over the 03 day event and the keen participation as well as the high standards seen may have been fuelled by the prospect of representing the country at the upcoming South Asian Games to be held in India.
Long Jumper Chamali Priyadharshani who established a new Sri Lanka Record with a clearance of 6.43 m was adjudged the Best Female Athlete of the Festival. Veteran High Jumper, Manjula Kumara Wijesekara leaping over the bar at a height of 2.19 m was named as the Best Male Athlete at the Festival.The Fastest Female was Rumeshika Rathnayake with the sprint double – 11.88 sec in the 100 m and 24.12 sec in the 200 m during heavy rain. The Fastest Male was Vinoj Suranjaya De Silva who clocked in at 21.02 sec in the 200 m and 10 45 sec in the 100 m – both new meet records. Middle Distance runner Lionel Samarajeewa also clinched a Double Gold – 10,000 m in 30 min 48.75 sec and 5000 m in 14 min 40.75 sec. Eranga Dulakshi won the 400 m Hurdles, timed at 59.51 sec establishing a new meet record as well as the 1500 m for Women with a performance of 4 min 23.80 sec Ayesha Maduwanthi established a new Sri Lanka Record in the Hammer Throw,with her heave measured at 43.18 m.
