The 15th Paralympic Games 2016 now being held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil brought in more glory for Sri Lanka. Dinesh Priyantha Herath secured the Bronze Medal in the F 46 Men’s Javelin Throw, with a personal best performan.ce of 58.23 M. Devandra Jhahbaria of India won Gold (63.97 M) while Guo Chunliang of China bagged the Silver (59.93 M)
This was only the 02nd Paralympic Medal ever won by a Sri Lankan, after the Silver for Pradeep Sanjaya in London four years ago. Dinesh Priyantha had qualified with a Personal Best of 55.26 M at the trials held in Diyagama and improved that mark in the Medal winning effort. He had also participated at the Para Grand Prix Games held this year in Berlin, Germany, where his trow was measured at 53.69 M
The 30 year old is a father of two – a son & a daughter. A past pupil of Dhathusena Maha Vidyalaya, Kagama, he lost his left arm in 2009 during the last phase of the civil war, being attached to the Saliyapura Camp in Anuradhapura. A soldier from the Gajaba Regiment, he is retired now.
He is being trained by Rohitha Fernando, a dedicated Coach. Sri Lanka sent a 9 member team to participate in events at Rio.
